Battery, Oil and Paint Disposal
Some household items cannont go in regular garbage because they can harm the environment or create safety hazards. Batteries, used oil and certain paint containers must be disposed of properly.
Residents can bring batteries, used oil, and empty paint cans to the Beech Hill Transfer Station for proper disposal and recycling.
Battery Disposal
All batteries – including car batteries, rechargeable batteries, and single-use (non-rechargeable) batteries – must be kept out of landfills. They contain environmentally hazardous materials that can leak into soil and water, and if damaged or improperly handled, can spark and cause fires in collection trucks or waste facilities.
Please ensure batteries are disposed of properly at designated drop-off locations.
Non-Rechargeable Batteries
Regular household batteries—including alkaline and lithium types (D, C, AA, AAA, 9-volt, 12-volt) and button batteries (such as watch and hearing aid batteries)—can be dropped off free of charge at the Municipal Office (285 Beech Hill Road) or at the Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) depot at the Beech Hill Solid Waste Resource Management Facility (1356 Beech Hill Road).
Rechargeable Batteries
Rechargeable batteries from items such as cell phones, laptops, cameras, and power tools can be recycled at the Beech Hill Transfer Station (1356 Beech Hill Road) or at participating retailers, including Bell Mobility, Canadian Tire, Home Depot, and Telus Mobility.
For more information, visit Recycle Your Bateries Canada or call 1-877-313-7732.
Car Batteries
Car batteries are banned from landfills in Nova Scotia and can be recycled free of charge at local Enviro-Depots (such as MacMillan’s), the Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) depot at the Beech Hill Solid Waste Resource Management Facility, and at scrap metal dealers.
Where do I dispose of used oil?
If you change the oil in your own automotive or recreational vehicles you can return your used oil to facilities throughout the region. Under the Program, businesses that sell oil are required to either accept used oil, or must arrange with another nearby facility to take back used oil. There is no charge for this program. Products covered in this program are engine oil, hydraulic fluid, lubricating oil (engines, turbines, gears), and transmission fluid.
Safety Tips for Dealing with Household Hazardous Materials
- Keep containers upright, tightly closed, with labels intact.
- Never mix substances or pour into other containers
- Avoid burning or reusing empty containers.
- Keep unused portions and empty containers (check labels to see if an empty container can be triple rinsed and safely discarded in household garbage)
- Keep out of reach of children, pets or wildlife.
