The Municipality of the County of Antigonish, in partnership with Nova Scotia Health Authority’s Health Equity and Social Justice Working Group for the Guysborough, Antigonish and Strait Area were pleased to unveil the new Health Equity Mural as part of the County’s Municipal Mural Project.
This project came about in May 2015 as a municipal mural competition with the goal of developing public spaces and highlighting our local arts community. We challenged both emerging and professional artists to design an image that would reflect the ideals, values and essence of our community. We hoped to receive a design that would inspire and celebrate who we are and who we strive to be as well as reflect our community today.
The mural, which looks like a handmade quilt, uses images and visuals rather than words to showcase the social determinants. Some are more abstract than others, but all help to paint a picture of what surrounds us in Antigonish County.
The mural was painted by local artist, Andrew Murray (who is also a member of the Health Equity Committee) and was unveiled Tuesday, January 12, 2016, at the Municipal Administration Office at 285 Beech Hill Rd, Antigonish. This is where it will stay to be viewed by the public.
