County Active Transportation (AT) Corridor?
The Active Transportation (AT) Corridor is a major regional project that will create a five-kilometre multi-use pathway and add six kilometres of paved shoulder along Trunk 4, connecting Beech Hill Road to Addington Forks Road and linking Exit 316 (St. Andrew’s) to Antigonish. Designed for walking, cycling, wheelchairs, e-bikes, and other human-powered mobility, the corridor will link directly with the Town’s multi-use pathway and StFX University, creating a safer, more accessible route for residents and visitors.
This initiative is a partnership between the Municipality of the County of Antigonish, the Government of Nova Scotia, and the Government of Canada. Funding for the project includes a $9 million federal investment, $6.9 million from the Province, and over $2 million contributed by the Municipality.
Construction planning began in 2022, with major work now moving forward. The project represents an important step toward stronger, healthier, and more connected communities through sustainable transportation.
Where are we now?
The project is currently in Phase 3 — a three-year effort that will extend the pathway from Church Street to the Beech Hill Roundabout.
- Phase 3A: Church Street Roundabout – Completed in December 2025
What’s Next?
- Phase 3B: Summer 2026 – Construction of a new bridge over the West River, along with the extension of the multiuse pathway from the new Church Street Roundabout to the Beech Hill Roundabout.
- Phase 4: Summer 2028 – Multi-use pathway construction will continue west from the James Steet intersection to Addington Forks roundabout. Construction will include the current multiuse pathway (MUP) transitioning into a 2-way cycle track alongside the current sidewalk. West of the Market St intersection (where the sidewalk ends), a new MUP will be constructed ending at the Addington Forks Roundabout. Before the project is complete, the paved shoulder between the Beech Hill roundabout and Exit 316 will also be finished.
